into a corner and forced to do it. >> last place in the entire galaxy, world, you name it. >> tonight the nation closes the door on an era in film making. why film will never be the same again. >> ferris with the leader and the win streak is over. >> they broke the win streak but the winning women of connecticut were no match for the women of stanford. the hardwood upset of the decade. good evening, i'm robert liles. ken bastida has the night off. >> and i'm dana king. another twist in the case that unraveled the san francisco crime lab. the former employee who admitted using cocaine evidence will not be charged and as joe vasquez tolls us this came as a surprise for san francisco's top cop. joe. >> reporter: they are still scratching their heads over this one here at the hall of justice. an attorney general spokesperson told us she couldn't elaborate on the decision, only that they have done an exhaustive investigation and have decided

not to do forward. san francisco police say they still believe they have a very strong case against deborah madden but the chief tells us tonight the state attorney general's office dropped the case a few weeks ago without explanation. >> obviously we're very disappointed. we believe that we presented a good case but it is a complex case. >> reporter: madden was accused of pill forsberg cocaine from the sfpd crime lab. it led to hundreds of cases being dismissed. they found cocaine in her home wrapped in the same kind of rare paper used at the crime lab. >> i thought that i could control my drinking by using cocaine. >> reporter: madden at first denied the theft to police investigators, then admitted it. >> so you're saying you have never taken any cocaine from evidence, even a small amount? for personal use. >> if some fell on the counter or something and it was sitting there afterwards, i may have taken that. but, no, i didn't scoop it out

of evidence. >> and what would you do with that? >> that i would use. >> she said to the investigators that the court transcripts read that she did it. >> yes, she did. i guess you would have to ask the prosecutors. i don't have an answer for that. >> she will not be reinstated. she is done with you? >> no, she will not be reinstated. she was terminated from employment. >> what more evidence do they need? >> i frankly, i don't understand the decision. >> supervisor david que says he can't believe the cases have been dropped. >> you know, obviously none of us are within the attorney general's office to be able to assess their decision, but i for one am certainly extremely surprised and disappointed that juts didn't seem to be done in this case. >> reporter: she admitted it on tape? >> she admitted to five times having used some res eye die. residue that was on its way to the trash can, basically. and, in california, you cannot prove a case by an individual's

statements, you have to have corroborating evidence. that's the problem they faced. >> that's her lawyer. he says his client still faces charges, he goes not believe she will see any prison time for that case. the attorney general has been investigating this because the da was smack in the middle of the controversy and they ended up dropping 600 cases because of this mess. >> and is this as far as this goes now, once the attorney general decides, that's it? >> >> reporter: well, what we were told by her attorney is it just means that entity will not be bringing charges, potentially somebody else could bring charges but it doesn't sound like anybody else is making noise in this area on that. keep in mind, the da is now the attorney general as of next week, it doesn't look like that attorney general is gonna get in the middle of this kasey they are. >> gotcha. all right. joe vasquez, thank you. >> you bet.

in 36 hours four separate officer involved shootings across the bay area, three of them fatal. the latest just before 9:00 this morning in hayward. an officer opened fire on a man who police say brandished a weapon and a gun along depot road. the officer initially responded to the home after a report of some sort of dispute. the name of the man shot is not released just yet. the officer is on standard administrative leave pending an investigation. that may ward shooting came just 12 hours after hasan leandro officer shot and killed a woman in oakland following a police chase. after the woman's car crashed at bancroft and 109 avenue police say she kept reffing her engine. fearing she was going to try to run them over one of the officers opened fire. the two officers also arrested a passenger who tried to run from the scene. the officers are now also on administrative leave. police chief george gascone

went to the pore tolly neighborhood where a man was shot and killed telling pe people there his officers were forced to fire. but the mother of the victim says she begged the sfp not to shoot. lynn ga darius songaila yee has this story. >> reporter: there are many victims here. this is a tragic event. >> reporter: the police stood there telling why officers had to gun down a mentally ill man. >> it was a lawful shooting meaning what the officers did was within the law. >> reporter: three officers answered a 911 call, a 15-year- old girl told them her uncle stabbed her and directed them to her room. bloodstains mark where he fell. his grieving mother told chinese language language station she begged officers to give her son time to calm down. they pushed her aside and started shooting she says. but they said they were backed into a corner and he was coming

at them with a scalpel-like knife. >> when he threatened the officers the officers tried to back out, run out of room, and basically they were left with very little, you know, alternatives. >> reporter: the family can't believe this happened. >> we live here more than 10 years and never have a thing happen. >> reporter: at the meeting the community had questions too. >> what can be done toward more sensitive non-violent escalation. >> kooi have done things better? we assess whether there is something in our training or policy that could be done in order to improve our operations. >> reporter: the chief insists that the evidence supports the officer's use of deadly force but he also admits this investigation is far from over and the district attorney will

ultimately decide if the officers acted within the law. in san francisco, linda yee, cbs5. other bay area headlines now. three people are dead following an apartment fire in east oakland this morning. it happened just after 2:00 in an upstairs unit of a four-unit building. a mother, her 3-year-old daughter, and a man died. the man had initially pulled the woman's 7-year-old daughter from the burning building but ran back inside. it's not clear what his relationship was to the family. investigators think overloaded electrical circuits caused that blaze. on the peninsula hasan transbus struck and killed a bus crossing a street in palo alto. it happened this morning. the mercury news reports the 52- year-old woman was in a cross walk when the bus made a left hand turn. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. and an ala immediate a

county rescuer saved a pregnant cow that fell into a well in castro valley. the 1300-pound cow was either walking or standing on the well's plywood cover when it collapsed. the cow's owner had a noose around the cow's head to hold it above the water so she wouldn't drown while firefighters drained the well. then they strapped her into a harness and a crane shifted her to safety and the cow seems just fine. well the latest numbers in the job market are out and they show we're headed in a positive direction. the number of americans applying for first-time unemployment benefits last week dropped to 388,000. that is the lowest level in 2 1/2 years. but, since the unemployment rate remains at nearly 10%, some job seekers say they are still not encouraged. >> i'm one of thousands of people applying for the job. i'm not even sure they ever get my resume.

>> the economists say unemployment benefit applications need to stay consistently below 375,000 in order to bring down the jobless rate. >> in case you didn't know it tonight stanford fans are celebrating one of the biggest upsets in school history. the women's basketball team toppled top-ranked uconn to end the huskies historic win streak. tim coil joins us with more. we predicted this right. >> that's right. when we started previewing this game you were the two believers. gino said they weren't going to lose either. so they have dominated the spotlight in the last few years, it's been well deserved. they have won a record 90 straight games but tonight was all about stanford according to head coach tar a vanderveer. the cardinals had a streak of their own winning 51 straight and they are the last team to bet beat the his keys back in the 2008 final. but forget maya moore.

courtesy of th for the first time in decades marin county reservoirs are overflowing and it's all courtesy of the recent storm which has brought all county reservoirs to capacity. it is only the third time in 30 years that has happened in december. there is so much water the

district opened relief valves which sent an earth-rattling or the rent downstream. so far the wet weather is outpacing marin's rainfall compared to last year. now at this time last year lake la bo nita was at 57% capacity. >> that's a beautiful sight. >> that's amazing. >> and we're going to continue to fill that reservoir and it's going to continue to spill over because it's going to keep on raining. >> we've got more showers coming guys, today catching a nice break. highs mainly in the 50s, as the sun was setting a few high clouds moving overhead. tonight we've got some partly to mostly clear skies around the bay area, allowing the temperatures to get pretty keeled. overlooking the bay at this hour, ninth nice and dry out there. but by this time we could be in for wet weather. in the meantime yes, cold air continuing to pour in from the gulf of mexico. sliding right into california. that's keeping those temperatures pretty chilly,

we're starting out on the frosty side early on tomorrow morning. then the clouds begin to move in late in the day. thickening up as we head into the evening hours. yup, a chance of showers as we head into late new year's eve. outside, 37 in napa, 40s inside the bay. you get the idea. we're headed way down once again and that cold air continues to pour in and really no major heat up on the horizon. we've got another storm, this one going to pay a visit on new year's eve. for tonight those chilly temperatures, dipping down in the 20s and 30s in some parts of the bay area. hooking at a very cold night. even inside the bay you could see some 30s and 40s, we've got a lot of cloud rolling through our skies, especially late in the day. you'll see some sunshine early on, look what happens in the evening hours. you'll see the rain parked off the coastline, got plans folks. plan on some showers to go along with that. that's probably picking up through the midnight hour. with that in mind it looks like

stuck with worthless chips. the bellagio says it will discontinue its 25- thousand the thief who robbed a las vegas can casino of more than a million dollars may be stuck with worthless chips. they say they'll discontinue the $25 chip in april. this after a man in a motorcycle helmet stole about 1 1/2 million dollars in chips there earlier this month. he was never caught.
